Wolfsbane a nightshade novel book 26/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The cloudy skies filtered sunlight through tall leaded windows stretching the length of the opposite wall, tingeing pale shadows with a rose-hued gleam as I scanned the room for an exit, finding a tall oak door to the right of the bed. My eyes adjusted to the low light of the room. What had happened? He’d left me alone in the dark for so long. I could hear his voice, feel the brush of his hands on my cheek as I’d slipped in and out of consciousness. A boy on his knees, blindfolded and bound, alone in the forest. The thought of the Bane alpha made my chest tighten, but when I dropped my face into my hands, another figure replaced him. I couldn’t see well in the dim light, but I could tell this shirt wasn’t mine, or rather, wasn’t Shay’s borrowed sweater-the one I’d been wearing the night everything changed.Ī blur of images rushed through my head. The fabric was smooth, with no sign of rips or tears from the crossbow bolts. ![]() ![]() My fingers moved along the surface of my shirt. ![]() It took me a moment to realize that the screams had been my own, each cry clawing my throat until it was raw. I took a couple of painful swallows, trying to moisten my parched mouth. The room became still, flooded with silence. I sat up with a gasp, blinking into the shadows. A terrible weight pressed into my chest, making me struggle for each breath as I lay drowning in my own blood. I was exhausted with the two of us uncertain of our way, we halted on a plateau lonelier than desert paths. ![]()

A Cruel Wind by Glen Cook6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() This was an omnibus of the first 3 Dread Empire novels from Glen Cook. As always with Cook, the prose is straightforward and unornamented (although the book & chapter titles are quite poetic) and the military maneuvers are well thought-out and engaging and most of the characters are relatively normal people who may or may not realize just how far in over their heads they are. This all takes place on a larger scale than the Black Company books it's written in third person so he can juggle several viewpoint characters and show how events in one part of the world (or in the distant past) are influencing events in another part of the world. The Dread Empire itself is vaguely Chinese in flavor the rest of the world has vaguely Nordic and Germanic and Mediterranean countries. The titular Dread Empire is barely mentioned in the first book but plays a larger role in the second & third. Also, there's a major shift in viewpoint characters between the first book ( A Shadow of All Night Falling) and the second & third ( October's Baby and All Darkness Met) - the main viewpoint characters in 2 & 3 (and in the books collected in the second omnibus) were secondary charaters in book 1. The structure is interesting - each book alternates between contemporary chapters, and chapters that flash back to events decades or centuries in the past that laid the groundwork for current events. ![]() pre-Black Company) Glen Cook - an omnibus collection of the original trilogy in his other major fantasy series, The Dread Empire. ![]() John marshall6/12/2023 ![]() During his tenure, the judicial branch of the new American government rose to a level of importance commensurate with that of the executive and legislative branches. He is widely regarded as having set a broad interpretation of the Constitution of the United States, which established the document as the basis of the American legal system and the “rule of law” as the law of the land. ![]() He was characterized by others as befitting Thomas Babington Macaulay’s description, “He neither sought nor shunned greatness, and found glory only because glory lay in the plain path of duty.”Ĭhief Justice John Marshall served the Supreme Court in that capacity from 1801 to 1835, the longest-serving chief justice in U.S. John Marshall is the Director of Orchestra/Professor of Cello at Eastern Washington University (EWU) and Principal Cellist with the Spokane Symphony. ![]() ![]() John Marshall was a man for the ages in an era that brought forth greatness. The original seated figure of John Marshall, the great Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835, was done late in the career of William Wetmore. The Marshall University community has taken great pride in observing the memory of its namesake, who has been described by modern-day biographer Jean Edward Smith, a noted member of the Marshall faculty, as the “Definer of the United States Constitution.” John Marshall Under Marshall’s leadership for more than 34 yearsthe longest tenure for any chief justicethe Supreme Court set forth the main structural lines of the government. ![]() The academy was named in honor of John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, who died on July 6, 1835. Like Mark Twain, he chronicled American stupidity in the tongue of his generation, and he captured it perfectly, from the insanity of the drug experience to the depravity of American politics. But he chose to do what he did, and he did it better than any of his generation. He probably could have been a brilliant novelist of any kind. He probably could have been a very rich super-novelist of popular, uninspired filth. ![]() He spoke to a true astonishment at the complete, unrelenting fuckedupedness of America and her politics, and he did it with a bite that was deserved and unmatched. Thompson is dearly missed by many people, and on a personal level, I miss him deeply. ![]() I hadn't read this book in years, and previously, it hadn't even been my favorite Hunter S. I recently went to Las Vegas for the first, and probably only, time in my life. ![]() ![]() Cast into the spotlight and tasked with all sorts of queenly duties, Sally can't help but wonder if all she's done is trade her captivity under Dr. ![]() Sally Skellington is the official, newly-minted Pumpkin Queen after a whirlwind courtship with her true love, Jack, who Sally adores with every inch of her fabric seams - if only she could say the same for her new role as Queen of Halloween Town. Tim Burton's the Nightmare Before Christmas ![]() Pax Romana by Jonathan Hickman6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() This notion is so pervasive that an historical retrospective of Christianity of any period, from the sect that became a movement, to the Reformation, to the present day’s multiple Christian iterations, is framed by the late Patristic era. I trace it to the period that the church developed into a formal organization with the establishment of canons and creeds defined by Church councils. There is an abiding image of the Church in wider public consciousness that it is unwittingly and in some cases antagonistically exclusionist. My thesis examines relations among practitioners of various religions, especially Christians and Jews, during the era when Jesus’ project went from being a Galilean sect, to a persecuted minority, to religio licita status, and eventually to imperial favor, all happening between the first century resurrection of Jesus and the fourth century rise of Constantine. ![]() The Arena Wars by Samantha Hoffman6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() I know there has to be a sequel some where out there. Only in this case, the love interest was blind and human. I did feel like it was some sort of Hunger Games/Twilight mash up. How many times could we hear that Alanna's (main character, and werewolf)sister was turning into something her and her family didn't like and, becoming lost to them. It was just such a short read that some of the repetition in the beginning wasn't necessary. ![]() Great story even though I feel a little cheated on some details. Anyway, I definitely cried at the end and I think everyone can agree that Ilene is a raging spoiled psycho bitch! I give this 3.75 stars. Which is obviously the point because there are 2 other books after this. ![]() I liked what I read but I just need to know more. The rules of werewolves and vampires or the characters backgrounds are thrown around and barely explained. I'm pretty good at accepting any world rules and plot twists that authors set for their books but I feel like I would be more satisfied with this book if I had more background information. Review 1: This was shorter than I thought it would be but lots of action kept me interested. ![]() The host stephanie meyers6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Soon, Melanie/Wanderer finds her way to the secret desert hideout of a group of humans resisting the alien takeover. In the midst of separating a generation of young female readers into Team Edward and Team Jacob, Stephenie Meyer, author of the wildly popular "Twilight" novels, started a new book called "The Host." Published by Little, Brown in 2008, "The Host" is a sci-fi yarn - with plenty of romance, as Meyer's legions of fans had come to expect - about a young woman named Melanie Stryder, one of the few humans left on Earth whose physical form has yet to be taken over by Souls, a race of body-snatching extraterrestrials who have colonized the planet.Įarly on, Melanie is captured and a Soul known as Wanderer implanted in her body. ![]() Murakami haruki dance dance dance6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() We love original content and self-posts!
